Strategic Planning, Mission, and Core Values
Strategic Planning
"The North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) has created an impressive record, particularly in the integration of its conservation mission throughout the institution. Today, the Garden has reached a level of maturity and complexity where it needs to focus in increasingly strategic ways to have the largest possible impact on its local, regional, national, and international audiences. Dr. Peter White, director of NCBG, launched this planning project to ensure a comprehensive view of the overall role of NCBG, its projects and programs, and to focus on institution-wide priorities." (from the Executive Summary of the North Carolina Botanical Garden Strategic Plan, 2005-2007)
The Strategic Plan, 2005-2007, was developed by the entire staff of the Garden, with particular work done by the department heads/ project managers working as a planning team. Several planning sessions were held with the whole staff, with the planning team, and by department heads with their staff members. The process was developed to capture as many ideas as possible and to help develop a culture of open dialogue where people at all levels work together and are free to challenge each other as they work on mutually established objectives and priorities.Richard Daley of EMD Consulting Group, LLC was engaged to facilitate the planning process. Seven focus groups including representatives of a broad range of interested parties provided broad input into the Plan. The North Carolina Botanical Garden's Strategic Plan, 2005-2007 includes 287 specific objectives for the three years. At the beginning of 2006, the planning team met again to discuss additional objectives for the year 2008. Please contact Peter S. White if you would like to know more about the current strategic plan.
