Chapel Hill, NC – The North Carolina Botanical Garden announced the award winners of the 27th Annual Sculpture in the Garden, an outdoor exhibition of works by North Carolina artists, at a Preview Party on Saturday, September 19.
Chapel Hill artist Susan Moffatt’s marble sculpture Succulent 2 was named Best in Show. Jonathan Davis of Pittsboro claimed a Merit Award his second year in a row, this time for Actual Proof, a blown glass installation. The People’s Choice Award went to Mocksville artist Dempsy Calhoun’s Princess Oxide, made from recycled steel, brass and glass.
These sculptures and nearly fifty more are on display at the North Carolina Botanical Garden until December 11. The sculptures are made from an assortment of materials including steel, concrete, wood, marble and more. The Garden’s native plant displays change with the season, offering new and interesting views of the sculptures throughout this exhibition. All sculptures in the show are for sale, and 30 percent of each sale supports the Garden.
Jennifer Edwards, curator at the Bechtler Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, served as this year’s juror, awarding the Best in Show and Merit awards. Guests of the Preview Party voted for the People’s Choice Award.
