CCG Donates All Produce to Hospital Workers

UNC Medical Center workers distribute donated produce.

We’re honored to announce that our Carolina Community Garden (CCG) has begun donating all harvested produce to healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis at UNC Hospitals.

Chard and kale grow in lush rows at the Carolina Community Garden. From under an acre of growing space on campus, the CCG produces over 5,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit per year. The garden normally grows food with the help of volunteering UNC students, staff, and community members and donates harvested produce to UNC’s lowest wage workers. But stay-at-home orders meant those normal volunteer operations and produce distributions were no longer possible.

We are thrilled to be working with UNC Hospitals to ensure the CCG’s harvest reaches healthcare workers and hospital staff, many of whom are low wage workers themselves. And as a bonus, UNC Medical School students have been approved as volunteers to help harvest the produce!

Thank you to our CCG partners – the UNC Employee Forum and the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention – and to the incredible UNC Health workers and Medical Center staff.
