Rendering of the future arbor by Andropogon Associates.
Update, 8/28/2024: The start of construction has been delayed. We don’t yet know the new projected start date, but we hope it will be no later than a week after the planned August 30 start. We will post updates here!
Beginning in early September, the arbor path along Cameron Avenue at Coker Arboretum will be closed for construction for several months. This phase of the Coker Arbor Renovation Project will create a new path with a gently sloping grade that is fully accessible. (The current arbor path ends in a flight of stairs, which makes it inaccessible to many community members.)
As part of this process, contractors will grade the new path, pour footings, and resurface the walkway. Then, they’ll build the new arbor with black locust columns, galvanized steel roof beams, and lighting to illuminate the walkway at night.
We expect construction of the new arbor to be complete by mid-spring 2025, at which point the path will be reopened, and our staff will install irrigation and begin replanting native vines, perennials, and shrubs around the new arbor.
Thank you to donors from the Class of 1997, the friends of David Robert, and over 300 arbor supporters who have made this project possible!
