Parking

Parking is free. Please view the Garden Map for the locations of accessible parking spaces. If you require assistance in moving from a parking space to the building entrance, please call 919-962-0522 and a staff member will be available to assist you. Additional parking can be found on Laurel Hill Road. Please see this map for directions.

Visiting by Bus

The Garden can be reached via a Chapel Hill Transit bus Monday - Friday. Route B stops at the Ronald McDonald House, across Old Mason Farm Road from the Garden. Please be aware that the bus may be a Carolina Livery bus contracted by Chapel Hill Transit.

Visiting by Bicycle or on Foot

Access to the Garden is now easier and safer as a result of recent sidewalk construction and intersection improvements at Fordham Blvd., including pedestrian-activated traffic signals and marked crosswalks at all four sides of the Old Mason Farm Rd/Fordham Blvd intersection, and at two sides (southern and western) of the Manning Dr/Fordham Blvd intersection. Bikes are also able to activate signals on the side streets. As always, please use caution when crossing these very busy intersections. AND if you are coming from the UNC Campus, try walking the beautiful Campus to Garden Trail through the Coker Pinetum.

Accessibility

The Garden and the James & Delight Allen Education Center are both wheelchair accessible. Marked accessible parking spaces can be found in the parking lot—several near the drop-off for the Education Center, and others closer to the Totten Center and original display gardens.  If you have special needs that could be accommodated to enable your visit to the Garden or participate in one of our programs, please let us know in advance by calling 919-962-0522.

Haiku in the Gardens

In this workshop, participants will engage in the meditative practice of writing haiku in the gardens. Haiku master Basho first advocated that we “learn about pines from the pine, and about bamboo from the bamboo.” Dwelling in nature is important to acquire haiku naturally. While there’s flora present, we can also pay attention to that subtle something like a swift breeze, a sonorous bird, unseen, or the aging tree. We will review the aesthetics of contemporary haiku writing and compose haiku on a traditional ginko walk through the gardens. All haiku experience levels are welcome, beginners too.

Blue Wild Indigo at Penny’s Bend

This hike will provide a wonderful opportunity to see rare flora at Penny’s Bend Nature Preserve, owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, and managed by the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Baptisia aberrans is an imperiled species at the state level and survives in only a small number of remnant Piedmont prairie or savanna patches. The Garden’s management practices at Penny’s Bend has favored a variety of prairie and savanna flora.

About 2 miles in length, much of this hike is on primitive trails over uneven terrain, with one short, steep climb up from the river. Wear sturdy hiking footwear and bring insect repellent, water, and a walking stick, if you ever use one.

Visiting Artist Master Course with Vincent Jeannerot: Longleaf Pine in Watercolor and Pen and Ink

In this three-day workshop, we will explore the beauty of the longleaf pine and learn how to paint it using watercolors. We will start with a tour of the garden to get inspired and choose our own subject. During the workshop, we will focus on painting the leaves of the longleaf pine in watercolor and adding details such as cones in sepia or black pen and ink. You will also learn about cross-hatching techniques in watercolor and pen and ink through several demonstrations.
