Claire Lorch and Fred Stang
Claire Lorch, Carolina Community Garden program manager, with Volunteer of the Year (and husband) Fred Stang.

Congratulations to Fred Stang, our Volunteer of the Year! Fred is an important part of our work at the Carolina Community Garden (CCG). Aside from the 1370 hours he has volunteered during regular workdays, he has easily spent the equivalent researching, planning. and building various structures for the CCG including a hands-free hand wash station using scrap wood and a donated sink, cold frames, and beautiful signs for the 43 garden beds. He is currently helping to build six new 18’ X 4 accessible beds. Fred harvests all the bamboo CCG uses to build beautiful trellises to support our tomatoes, beans, and more. He has taught staff and many volunteers how to build these trellises and he led a trellis building workshop for school gardens. Fred has also helps with grant writing and introduced the CCG to someone who became our most generous donor to date. He is currently researching how to improve the drainage at the CCG. And this is just a partial list!

The Volunteer of the Year program began last year as a way to thank several volunteers who helped us get through the worst of the pandemic years. Volunteers honored so far include:

2019 – Sarah Dendy
2020 – Jim Fickle
2021 – Joe Ellis
2022 – Margot Ringenburg
